North Dakota was settled by Norwegians, Germans, Icelandic and  Czech. Culture and ethnic customs are prevalent.

Rodeos are popular.

North Dakota is one of the best states for viewing the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis.

Fishing, hunting, trapping and outdoor sports are popular. In winter, snowmobiling, ice skating, ice fishing, skiing and ice hockey are popular.

North Dakota became a state in 1889. It was one of the last regions in America to be settled. Native American tribes hunted in the area because the buffalo and antelope grazed on the grass lands. The climate is cool and sub humid ideal for wheat and cattle ranching.

The highest point in the state is White Butte at 3506 ft.

Devils Lake is the largest body of water in the state. There are 3 state parks bordering the lake.

There are 56 state historic sites in No. Dakota. There are 62 National Wildlife Refuges inside the state too.

The main rivers are the Red & Souris Rivers, The Missouri,  The James River and the Little Missouri.

Native American tribes in the state are: Mandans, Hidatsas, Arikaras who lived along the Missouri River. The Chippewas and Crees who lived in the Northeast. The Assiniboins who lived in the north. The Yanktonai and Wahpeton Dakotas who live in the Southeast. The Teton Dakotas and the Crows who live in the west.

North Dakota Indian Reservations:

  1. Fort Totten and Standing Rock Indian Reservation - Dakota or Sioux.
  2. Turtle Mountain Reservation - Plains Ojibwa or Chippewa tribe.
  3. Fort Berthold Reservation - Arikaras, Hidatsas and Mandans

The western half of the state is apart of the Great Plains whereas the eastern part of the state is apart of the central lowlands. East and north of the Missouri river is the Altamont Moraine which is a principle flyway for migrating waterfowl and makes good hunting grounds.

There are 3 broad steps consisting of the Red River Valley in the North, the drift prairie and in the west the Missouri Escarpment. The North Dakota part of the Great Plains is known as the Missouri Plateau.

There are buffalo, white-tailed deer, elk, bear, fox, mink and more wildlife a plenty.

The North Dakota Badlands are in the southwest and in the same location as the Little Missouri Grasslands, the Maah Daah Hey Trail and the Theordore Roosevelt National Park.

The Maah Daah Hey Trail is a 96 mile trail for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Great mountain biking.
